#1 You might need a new water heater if you don’t know how old your water heater is.
Many homeowners are unaware of how old their water heater is. This is a definite indication that water heater is old. Most water heaters last about 10 years sometimes a few years longer if well maintained, which let’s face it, regular water heater maintenance is often overlooked by many homeowners. If the homeowner did not purchase their home brand new, and have been in the home for a while it would be a good idea to check the age of the water heater.
#2 You might need a new water heater if you don’t have any hot water.
Not having hot running water is a dead giveaway that the water heater is near the end of its life. There are a couple of quick fixes that can restore hot running water, but if it becomes an ongoing problem or if the function of the water heater cannot be restored, it’s probably time to replace it.
#3 You might need a new water heater if you have brown discolored water.
Another sign that the water heater needs to be replaced is if there is brown or rust colored water coming out of the hot water taps. This is a result of sediment building up inside the tank. Rust is a naturally occurring sediment that builds up over time. To combat this, the tank should be drained at regular intervals so that it doesn’t get out of hand. However, eventually the rust will win, and the tank will have to be replaced.
#4 You might need a new water heater if you find a pool of water on the floor near your water heater.
Discovering a pool or puddle of water on the floor by a water heater is not a good sign. Over time water heater can spring leaks for a variety of reasons. It’s important to be on the lookout for leaks, as a leaky water heater can result in water damage, flooding, and less efficiency.
#5 You might need a new water heater if you hear a loud banging sound when it is active.
If a loud banging sound starts when the tank is actively heating water this is a bad sign. Remember sediment builds up over time, especially if the tank isn’t drained on a regular basis. Large sediment masses can form inside the tank as a result of constant heating. After a while this solid mass can start to bang around inside the tank. This can cause damage and leaks to occur. Not to mention sound quite alarming.
